Love & Madness
present
Hard Times
In this production Love&Madness takes the humour, drama and theatricality of Dickens' tale and gives it the fluid, physical staging that the company is known for.
With references to the industrial crises of the 70s, new controls on education in the 90s and the horrors wreaked by globalisation on vulnerable workers worldwide, we locate the story both then and now, asking whether we have made much progress since Dickens revealed the incompatability of the human spirit with the uncompromising logic of industry.
The result is a thought-provoking, colourful and entertaining performance that respects the original text, but approaches it with the wonder and creativity for which Dickens himself argues.
